A protest over the Waqf law turned violent once again, claiming three lives in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
Fresh violence broke out in Shamsherganj, a locality in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, during a protest over the Waqf law, resulting in three fatalities. On Friday, similar unrest had already taken place, and so far, 118 people have been arrested in connection with the incidents. Father and Son Killed by Mob

Protests Erupted After Friday Prayers
Following Friday prayers, large crowds took to the streets in protest against the Waqf law. In the Dhuliyan area, demonstrators blocked National Highway-12, pelted stones at police vehicles, and set several vehicles ablaze. At least 10 police personnel were injured, and some had to take shelter in a mosque to escape the mob. On Saturday, the violence spread to Dhuliyan, where reports of a person being shot surfaced. Police responded with lathi charges and tear gas to bring the situation under control.
Political Reactions
The issue has taken a political turn as well. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“The law people are angry about was not created by us. It is a Central government law, and we have clearly stated that it will not be implemented in Bengal. Then why this violence?”
Meanwhile, the BJP criticized Mamata’s government over the issue. West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said:
“If BJP comes to power, such hooliganism and minority-led violence will be ended within five minutes.”
