Mamata Banerjee on Kumbh: Amid controversy over ‘Death Kumbh’ remark, She Says “I respect all religions”

Mamata Banerjee on Kumbh: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is embroiled in controversy over her ‘Death Kumbh’ remark, has clarified her statement. On Thursday, Mamata said that she respects all religions and cultures.

Earlier, Mamata had criticized the Uttar Pradesh government regarding the management of the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. She had referred to the event as the “Death Kumbh,” alleging that stampedes were causing loss of lives. Mamata also accused the authorities of hiding the actual number of deaths.

Her statement sparked a controversy, with the opposition in Bengal and the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh attacking the TMC supremo. In response, Mamata said, “Who said I don’t respect my religion? Remember, religion belongs to an individual, but festivals are for everyone. Our country has many states, each with its own language, education, lifestyle, culture, and beliefs. But we respect all cultures. That is why unity in diversity is our philosophy and ideology.”

Following Mamata’s remarks, not only the BJP but also saints and other political parties reacted. The National Secretary of Shri Panchayati Akhada Mahavirnirmani stated that Mamata Banerjee, being in a responsible position, should not indulge in such remarks. Jagatguru Rambhadracharya criticized her, saying, “Anyone who dishonors Sanatan’s flag will see it fall on its own.” He also said that he never thought Mamata would become so low-minded.

On this issue, Mamata received support from Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.
