यह क्षेत्र लगभग 700 साल पुराना है और ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध में भारी नुकसान के बाद भी इसे फिर से बनाया गया और आज भी इसका ऐतिहासिक आकर्षण बरकरार है।

यहाँ आने वाले पर्यटक सेंट लैम्बर्टस चर्च देख सकते हैं और राइन नदी किनारे बने Rheinuferpromenade (राइन प्रोमेनेड) पर टहल सकते हैं, जो Altstadt से जुड़ा हुआ है। Burgplatz नामक चौक भी इसी प्रोमेनेड का हिस्सा है।
